Camp 3Camp 3 was located at Niutung which is about 20 miles southwest of Sian (34-16 108-54). The camp was originally located at Shang Hsien (33-51 109-46) but was moved on 23 September 1944. Headquarters was established in an old Buddhist monastery. Personnel of the 5th and 6th Columns of the Chinese Commando Army were trained at this camp. 876 Chinese of the 5th Column and 732 Chinese of the 6th Column received instruction at Camp 3. Formerly, when the Japs were threatening Sian, the 6th Column with headquarters at Shih Hua Chieh (32-15 111-24), and the 5th Column with headquarters near Chen Ping (33-09 112-13) played a significant part in retarding the Jap advance. Twenty-eight enlisted men and 28 Chinese received instruction at Camp 3 in plane and ship recognition, weather observation, and radio operation. There was a net of intelligence and weather stations operating along the China coast between Shanghai and Canton. The graduates of this unit were sent to establish coast watch stations in the area north of Shanghai.
